ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the intriguing connections between AI-generated dialogue and urban life, emphasising the role of scripts in both contexts. It highlights how chat platforms and virtual meetings produce transcripts that record conversations, similar to how LLMs generate scripts in response to prompts. Through examples of ChatGPT-generated dialogue, I illustrate the capability of LLMs to produce convincing scripts. I use Schank and Abelson’s concept of scripts in cognitive science to reinforce conversation as a longstanding focus in AI research. The chapter also examines the influence of media on everyday conversations, emphasising the impact of hypermediated and scripted interactions and how they capture and influence conversations in urban settings.
