ABSTRACT
This chapter sequentially examines the climate change communication strategies of mainstream parties in Germany, Spain, and Austria offering also a descriptive summary of the contemporary political and environmental history of each country. Starting with Germany, an analysis of the SPD and CDU/CSU sheds light on distinct approaches within the context of the nation’s green identity. Shifting focus to Spain, the chapter scrutinises the climate change communication of the centre-left PSOE and centre-right PP exploring nuanced perspectives in a context where coalition dynamics differ from Germany and Austria. Subsequently, the examination moves to Austria, providing insights into how climate change is communicated by the mainstream parties – the SPÖ and ÖVP with noting also the FPÖ’s historical political significance and its government role during part of the investigated period. Concluding this chapter, a brief discussion will underscore the commonalities and differences identified across the analysed countries, offering a holistic understanding of how mainstream parties engage with the discourse on climate change in Europe.
