ABSTRACT
This chapter presents the results of the Discourse-Historical Approach of the three populist far-right parties in Germany, Spain, and Austria, focusing on discourse topics and strategies related to climate change obstruction. Beginning with the AfD in Germany, the party’s obstructionist discourse strongly rejects climate policies, emphasising economic consequences, and displays hostility towards the Green Party, activists, and the government. Vox in Spain, a relatively young party, exhibits a parallel obstructionist discourse with less emphasis on denying human-made climate change. However, Vox aligns with the AfD in opposing climate initiatives and emphasising economic repercussions, particularly in agriculture. The chapter concludes with the FPÖ in Austria, revealing a similar obstructionist discourse. The FPÖ discredits scientists, uses religious metaphors to downplay urgency, and employs argumentum ad hominem towards figures like Greta Thunberg. The party underscores potential economic and democratic consequences of climate protection measures, aligning with the AfD and Vox. This comprehensive overview highlights distinct yet converging obstructionist discourses across the three populist far-right parties.
