ABSTRACT

While international students in Australia are visible actors in institutions of learning, they are also visible and active participants in the broader Australian community. International education stakeholders acknowledge that international students bring economic benefits in terms of wealth generation and take part in the wider Australian community through the provision of services they deliver in destination sites. This chapter, however, paints a portrait of the international student as a complex transient actor who has captured academic imagination. This chapter considers international students as more than just temporary migrants who see their international education and lived experiences as foreign students as a transient experience to better professional and personal lives. This chapter also highlights that international students are now a growing area of academic interest not only in pedagogy but also in the lived experiences of these students.
