ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the critical issue of activist burnout in the context of collective climate action. It emphasizes that the urgency of the climate crisis may lead some to neglect personal wellbeing, which is not just an individual concern but also a collective problem that can disrupt social movements. Activist burnout is caused by personal factors, group norms, and internal group issues. Thus, diverse measures can be taken to build resilient movements that address both individual and group dynamics. However, the discussion on preventing activist burnout raises a dilemma: factors promoting burnout are sometimes the same ones driving collective climate action in the first place. The authors highlight this dilemma while also proposing personal and group strategies to foster healthy engagement in climate action. The chapter ends with a group exercise for assessing activist burnout.
