ABSTRACT
In parallel with the escalating insecurity affecting the lower class, the global resurgence of philanthropy among the highest echelons of society serves as a potent indicator of rising inequality. This phenomenon has garnered significant attention due to the vast resources amassed by philanthropists, with the largest foundations now rivaling international organizations. The satisfaction and even jubilation experienced by philanthropists illustrate how individuals derive meaning from their resources and assert control over them. This subjective component is crucial to their social position and activities, warranting comprehensive investigation. Consequently, this chapter builds on an unprecedented examination of both the objective and subjective aspects of philanthropy: its role in perpetuating inequalities alongside the motivations of those who give. A vital connection between these two dimensions lies in the desire to manage the future and ensure the familial continuity of the donor’s legacy.
