ABSTRACT
This chapter covers important information defining artificial intelligence (AI) in general and generative AI specifically. It addresses AI based on its capabilities and functionalities. Additionally, this chapter provides a brief history of AI use in education and its important development within the field. Knowing this somewhat technical information helps everyone in their overall AI literacy development, which will also be useful in developing instructional design capability with AI.
