ABSTRACT
This chapter explains the key components of instructional design overall in order to give you a better understanding of the important aspects of teaching and learning. As part of an understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) literacy, those who will be able to use AI to its greatest extent are those who know about the subject matter that they are using the AI to assist with. This is why understanding these key components of instructional design is so important. Key instructional design principles that will be covered in this chapter include understanding course alignment, backward design, motivation, instructional presence, and effective procedural practices (such as ADDIE – Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation). Additionally, we will review and gain an understanding of different educational theories and ideas, such as Kolb's Experiential Learning Cycle and Bloom's Revised Taxonomy which will greatly aid in helping educators ask the right questions when prompting generative AI for assistance in course creation, teaching, and learning.
