ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the representation of human-machine relations within the Sanrio anime Aguresshibu retsuko (Aggretsuko), examining how various characters interact with different technologies, from the traditional abacus to advanced AI. Through its anthropomorphized characters and satirical narrative, the anime highlights generational and gendered differences in attitudes toward technology. The main character, Retsuko, a millennial red panda, navigates workplace stress by using both contemporary and traditional technologies, revealing underlying tensions in modern Japanese work culture. The analysis considers the metaphorical use of animals to depict emotional and social struggles, drawing connections between character behaviors and broader societal issues, such as power harassment and resistance to technological change. The study also addresses the role of technology in reinforcing or challenging stereotypes and generational divides, ultimately contributing to a deeper understanding of the complexities of human-machine relations in contemporary media.
