ABSTRACT

The conclusion reviews the overall argument of the book and then reflects on possible pathways from the vision outlined here to meaningful change at a global level. One pathway could involve incremental reforms working within existing institutions within and among a subset of countries. Policy initiatives could appreciably shift power in pluralist directions while shaping the landscape as globalisation continues advancing. Another pathway could involve eventually reforming supranational institutions as they become more powerful. Among scenarios considered is that existing supranational institutions would crack under pressure from the aspirations of a global majority hungry for alternatives. Such a radical and potentially turbulent transition could be justified in some accounts of political legitimacy and its decay. Finally, the conclusion considers different layers and timescales of civilisational change and counsels humility in reflecting on the meaning of such an agenda and its limits.
