ABSTRACT

This chapter explores two main ways women discussed UBI in relation to violence. First, I examine women's perspectives on how UBI might help them escape domestic and family violence. In this context, having an income independent of a partner—as Jules (30 years) mentions in the quote at the start of this chapter—is crucial. The unconditional nature of UBI is also significant, as it contrasts with other financial support options for women, such as social security benefits and one-off “ending violence payments”. These alternatives are often highly conditional, making it difficult for many women to prove or maintain eligibility, which can itself be experienced as a form of violence (as touched on in Chapter 3). Second, I explore how UBI might help women avoid insecure and unsafe housing, which can also increase their vulnerability to violence.
