ABSTRACT

Since the global population of older adults is anticipated to rise, the number of people seeking to obtain caregiving services and wishing to be more actively engaged in life will be more apparent. Therefore, older adults aspiring day-to-day special care in home settings and interested in improving living standards can likewise benefit from an amiable companion. This chapter presents the findings of a scoping review that qualitatively examines literature on the use of one type of promising technology, that is companion robots including both pet-like and humanoid robots, and digital security coupled with the new 5G technology for home-based care for older adults with dementia. To ascertain the operation of these technological innovations in the future, we discuss remaining challenges, unused opportunities, security risks, potential remedies, and suggest a dementia-centred concept including a proposed implementation framework. This chapter is based on a published and peer-reviewed scoping review, which summarises the state of knowledge as of spring 2020, combined with evidence up to summer 2025.
