ABSTRACT

The main findings of the study are summarized. Though the disruption and financial cost experienced by the literary heritage sites surveyed were both devastating, still there are reasons for optimism that lessons can be learned, and that new ways of working can be built upon. Quantitative data yielded grounds for questioning an over-reliance on high visitor numbers, and for suggesting that the power of the digital turn might not have been as significant as the power of engaging with literary heritage through nature and the outdoors. Quantitative data suggests a new culture of resilience and innovation in many literary heritage sites, which gives cause for optimism as these organizations move into the future.
