ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 explores praxes of displacement that operate in the interstice between contemporary art practice and institutions of learning. Providing background on the relationship between the contemporary higher education landscape and experiences of those forced to flee, this chapter explores how art projects engaging with experimental pedagogy challenge the structural violence of education systems and the socio-political inequalities resulting from forced displacement. Centring analysis on three case studies – Artists for Artists (AfA), The Silent University (SU) and the International Academy of Art Palestine (the IAAP) – this chapter assesses how art projects engaged in experimental pedagogy challenge North/South relations, the contemporary ‘eduscape’, and mobility (in)justice. It makes clear how AfA, the SU and the IAAP are demonstrative of what is defined as a ‘parasitic relationship’ with arts institutions – each working with organisations and harnessing their resources, while at the same time using artistic strategies of institutional critique to challenge models of knowledge ownership.
