ABSTRACT
This chapter draws together the findings of the book: it compares the relative strengths and weaknesses of the conflictual or discouraging and the cooperational or hopeful variants of the ten competing metaphors analyzed. Furthermore, it lays out the policy choices recommended by the conflictual and cooperational variants of the metaphors. The chapter encourages creative and flexible metaphor usage – and innovative and flexible policies in the realm of international relations. It argues that we have a choice between the violent jungle and the nurturing herd, between the zero-sum game and the buzzing playground. Based on the preceding analysis, it claims that we can often direct metaphors and accompanying physical action in the field of international relations to the direction we find desirable.
