ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the conflictual and cooperational variants of the ten structural metaphors for international relations that the second part of the book will analyze in more detail, namely international relations as natural selection, family dynamics, balancing, buildings, playing games, doing business, treating illnesses, journeys, musical performances, and puzzles. It discusses the choice of these ten metaphors and the relationship of this book with earlier research on the topic. The analysis is based on the logic of the metaphors themselves: the associations they evoke, the entailments they carry with them. As to the expert usage studied, the book is inclusive: it examines the explanations of both theorists and practitioners in the field.
