ABSTRACT

The chapter presents growing political interest in CCS/CCUS technologies along with the basis of the technologies themselves. From the very beginning of international concerns on climate change and the first political solutions on an international level toward the latest European strategic approaches, the European Union's Green Deal and Fit for 55 Plan define both European as well as each member country's perspective on climate policy. Carbon dioxide capture, storage and possible use technologies are necessary for mid-term mitigation strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions globally, especially in the context of unmet climate goals and technological difficulties in phasing out fossil fuels in the industry. In the European perspective, it is also an opportunity to build a technological and innovative advantage in competition with economies based on cheap mass production.
