ABSTRACT

The craft of the archaeologist will be in focus here as we discuss the outcome of Ghosh’s survey in Bikaner with reference to a similar survey conducted by an American team during the same years in the Baluchistan region. The emphasis is on an individual archaeologist’s decision to build his craft or methodology on an understanding of the landscape, context of the site and the historicity of the social traditions, or to go to the site for personal glory and immediate gain. As with all the research programmes of Ghosh, it was not merely to document a few Harappan sites but to locate the archaeological landscape of the region and to preserve it for future generations.
