ABSTRACT

Spirituality is an integral aspect of human development. This chapter explores Islamic spiritual development during childhood, as well as showcases the implications of spirituality in fulfilling one’s existential purpose according to Islamic legislation. Following this, the chapter introduces a summative model for tarbiyah (Islamic upbringing) and its relevance in childhood spiritual development, showcasing its various components and the relationship between them. Next, relevant terms are defined, including the idea of qalb (heart) and fiṭrah (innate inclinations), and it is explained how Muslims view and understand innate inclinations in the self. Then the chapter provides examples that inform the role of parents and educators, and reiterate the centrality of spirituality during child development. Through a presentation of a case study, the chapter also explores different faith-based coping mechanisms for children navigating adversities or the aftermath of a trauma. Finally, implications for practice are discussed and ideas for practitioners and educators inspired by Islamic spiritual development are suggested.
