ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes to expand existing literature on discourse on populism by offering new avenues for a multi-layered and complexified linguistic research. Given that existing literature has mainly focused on collocation analysis of populism in media discourse and mediated political discourse, this chapter proposes to analyse other linguistic and discursive aspects – pragmatic mitigation and intensification, metaphors, agentivity and argumentation – in interactional contexts such as parliamentary debates and interactions on Twitter. In doing so, this chapter expands the field of research on discourse on populism by focusing on other discursive genres and by providing new insights that contribute to improve our understanding of the portrayal of populism in contemporary societies.
