ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the emergence of the ageing population in China and offers comparisons with ageing in Asia and ageing globally. The chapter compares the ageing society with the process of ageing in East Asian countries such as Japan and South Korea. It also offers a brief section, including data, on global comparisons, and the challenges faced by older people in the face of increasing digitalisation of social life. The chapter introduces the concept of the third age, representing people who have entered retirement, or close to retirement, but who are still active. The ageing process of the third age cohort is associated with the rapid development of the digital society. Third agers have acquired some digital literacy, but they are different from younger digital natives in terms of literacy and consumption.
