ABSTRACT

This chapter identifies the how of social media use. It shows how third agers use mobile apps to maintain relational resources and develop social engagement. It explores how social media engagement online enlarges third agers’ social engagement offline. This chapter also addresses how mobile use empowers third agers to engage in new pursuits, such as becoming ‘ageing influencers’, and players of digital games. In addition, it discusses the effects of emotional attachment to mobile devices among third agers, including some negative effects on family and friends.
