ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a discussion of health exercise in China and its relationship to individualisation. The chapter introduces the traditional Chinese cultural concept of yangsheng (literally ‘nurturing life’) and background on exercising with the assistance of mobile apps before showing how this is linked to the process of individualisation. This chapter illustrates how many retired people rely on exercise apps to maintain their health and how they adopt a yangsheng lifestyle, hence the description ‘digital yangsheng ’. The chapter argues that fitness apps could promote health management and further stimulate the process of individualisation in China by providing more options for the self-management of people's health.
