ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to explore underground culture in Yogyakarta through a case study of the Lamidet Society, a community which regularly and independently produces underground albums and organizes concerts. Some studies on underground culture in Indonesia stated that underground music is a medium of expression for young people to express themselves on social and political conditions without any follow-up in other political actions. However, these evaluations do not apply to our study. We discovered that the music and performances created by the Lamidet Society are not limited to expressions of grievance but are the beginnings of their struggle to create socio-political change. From music and the stage, their restlessness continues to political actions, especially through social media. Their musical performances and critiques in social media have been a means of advocacy for the marginalized urban poor.
