ABSTRACT

This chapter shares Singapore’s unique approach to localising the Compassionate Communities movement within a highly urbanised, multi-ethnic city-state. As Singapore faces the realities of a rapidly ageing population, the need to mobilise communities in end-of-life care has become increasingly urgent. Every town in Singapore has its own network of grassroots, healthcare, and social service partners—an asset that makes it more ready to embrace Compassionate Communities Singapore to provide support for caregivers, dying, grieved, and bereaved, as part of everyday life. Led by the Singapore Hospice Council (SHC), the initiative began with understanding needs from the ground, engaging diverse stakeholders, and co-developing the vision, mission, and user guides. The official launch of Compassionate Communities Singapore on 12 October 2025 marks a key milestone in building a shared responsibility for care in the community. This chapter outlines Singapore’s journey, key strategies, lessons learned, and a call to action: to grow and sustain a compassionate ecosystem, one community at a time.
