ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that teachers cannot be expected to exercise leadership without appropriate forms of support. Facilitation is a form of support that enables teachers, regardless of status or position, to exercise leadership. Key elements of a proposed approach include working with school-based groups to build a sense of community, using workshop tools to enable participants to engage in reflection, deliberation and discussion, and collaborating with facilitators in other schools to arrange networking opportunities. Readers are directed to a freely downloadable package of guidance materials and workshop tools that can enable anyone to initiate and facilitate support for non-positional teacher leadership.
