ABSTRACT
The approach of the US Intelligence Community is to promote an adherence to tradecraft standards and methodologies as part of a paradigm of objectivity that lends scientific respectability to the profession. This approach influences production within foreign governments that partner with US intelligence agencies and private companies that hire former US intelligence officials. The outcome is diminishing returns with regard to the quality of production, and the emerging consensus solution is automation through Artificial Intelligence. However, there is a way to reconceive analysis as a process that allows subjective experience and empathy to perform a communicative function. Surprisingly, these objective and subjective approaches find common ground when pushed to their extremes.
