ABSTRACT

This chapter extends the book’s focus from the clause to the text, by addressing the role of the word “empathy” in cohesion, under the assumption that, to understand the meaning of “empathy”, it is necessary to look at the relations between this word and surrounding ones not only at phrasal and clausal levels, but also at textual level. Non-structural cohesive devices (Reference, Substitution, Ellipsis, Conjunction, and Lexical relations) are prioritized, because they are the most suitable to investigate on language corpora, due to their higher level of form-function correlation in English, as opposed to structural cohesive devices (e.g. Theme).
