ABSTRACT
How did I get here? It's a question that still slightly baffles me as I think about my path to the deanery. Academia was certainly not part of my original plan. My parents were both teachers and had always strongly counselled against a career in education. As a child, I always planned to become a chartered accountant, primarily because I loved money, and wanted lots of it to fuel my shopping addiction. And, on graduating in economics from Lancaster, that's exactly what I went on to do.
