ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the focus turns to aquaculture, exploring partial domestication in sea cucumber farming. Or as the sea cucumber puts it: How Would You Feel about Being Trapped? Sea cucumber farms are described in ethnographic detail, alongside accounts from sea cucumber farmers in different coastal locations, to explore different becomings in multispecies and multimaterial ocean farms, while drawing on anthropology of aquaculture and domestication. Special attention is given to the challenge of reproduction, including efforts to develop more science-based approaches in a hatchery. The chapter ends with a discussion of some dangers that sea cucumbers face in captivity, in the hands of human care as well as environmental changes beyond human control. A sea cucumber delivers a poem on the impacts of climate change to conclude the chapter.
