ABSTRACT
In 2023, the Chinese film market experienced significant growth, with the top 10 box office movies featuring a diverse range of genres, including science fiction, animation, and action. Domestic films have been increasing their box office share year by year, while the box office of foreign films has been declining. Among them, domestic animated films have achieved significant success in box office revenue, with the top three animated films – Chang An (2023), Boonie Bears: Guardian Code (2023), and Deep Sea (2023) – all being domestically produced. Although there is room for improvement in overall quality, domestic animated films are gaining strong momentum, and they have begun to focus on integrating traditional culture with modern technology to appeal to young audiences. The animation production industry benefits from technological breakthroughs and efficient tools, attracting investors to invest. Integration of the industry chain and international expansion have emerged as key trends in financing. However, domestic animated films still face challenges, including a lack of originality and innovation, disproportionate investment and returns, and unclear market positioning. To enhance competitiveness, it is essential to strengthen talent training, encourage originality, optimise investment models, and clarify market positioning.
