ABSTRACT
This book has attempted a general description, but is the perspective of its author universal? He is a Western man with limited linguistic and cultural means. How a knowledge of non-Western theory can enlarge our view of translation by putting it into perspective. But the limitations of Western theory can also be seen from within. Translation is not only everywhere, but it is also the same everywhere, although (because?) it is always different. Therefore, the West is as good a place as anywhere else to discuss it.
