ABSTRACT
Sir John Jenkins reflects upon the relevance of the six years he spent studying Classics at Cambridge University between 1974 and 1980 to his subsequent career (1980 to 2015) in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO – now the FCDO). He recalls the ways in which familiarity with classical antiquity framed the experience of the world for generations of diplomats.
