ABSTRACT
In this chapter Sir Michael Fallon reviews the ways in which his background in Classics coloured his political career. He recalls his advocacy, both as an MP and a Minister, for the retention of classical subjects within the curriculum, including his central role in establishing the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Classics. Sir Michael also reflects on the parallels with ancient history thrown into sharp relief during his tenure as Defence Secretary presiding over military operations in Iraq and Syria.
