ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the teaching and learning process of higher education and adult education in India. The integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into academic settings has reshaped the process of knowledge construction, particularly in AI-augmented environments, prompting a need for theoretical adjustments. With the incorporation of AI policies in the education sector, the Indian government has demonstrated a genuine commitment to adapt to the evolving nature of AI-powered education and its potential impact on the country's education system. Three distinct discourses can be noted here: (1) to figure out the current landscape of academia in India where AI is gradually intermingling with higher education and adult education, (2) the imperative for rethinking of established pedagogical foundations and the challenges in the country context and (3) technological optimism in utilising these new opportunities by claiming space for the gradual shift. Overall, the chapter emphasises the need for a nuanced approach that recognises the interplay between GenAI, adult and higher education, and the prevalent digital divide in India. The aim is to shed light on the potential of GenAI, poised to transform teaching and learning methodologies, address educational inequalities, and enhance overall learning outcomes.
