ABSTRACT

The significant evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is increasingly evident in education. Aimed at identifying and addressing gaps in existing research on AI technology adoption in higher education in Romania, the present study's objective was to determine the key factors that impact students' intentions to adopt AI in the learning environment and to enhance their engagement. The study involved 583 students from various universities in Romania, representing different fields of study and academic years. Results showed that attitudes towards AI are positively and indirectly related to their academic engagement, with intrinsic motivation for AI and the intention to learn about AI as mediators. The model illustrates how students' perceptions of AI impact their academic engagement, shaping their motivation and learning behaviours. These findings help us better understand what educators can do to better meet students' needs and highlight important areas to focus on in teacher training.
