ABSTRACT

There is increasing pressure on universities to contribute to sustainability and the green transition. While efforts such as integrating sustainability into curricula, developing sustainability strategies and implementing green campus initiatives have been widely studied, the environmental impact of universities’ core activities, particularly research and education, remains underexplored. This chapter addresses this gap by examining the environmental impact of Norway’s University of Stavanger (UiS) through five university modalities: education, knowledge production, service delivery, public debate and campus operations. The findings reveal both positive and negative impacts across all modalities. Moreover, the chapter discusses the challenges of balancing these impacts, the role of university leadership and the connections to regional green transitions.
