ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of the multifaceted impact of digital transformation across various sectors of the economy, highlighting how digital technologies have redefined traditional models of production, service delivery and labor. It introduces a three-tiered framework of digital economy development – from core ICT infrastructure to sector-wide diffusion – and applies it to areas such as agriculture (e-agriculture), manufacturing (Industry 4.0), commerce (e-commerce), finance (fintech and open banking), labor (gig economy) and public administration (e-government).

In agriculture, precision farming and data-driven decision-making are optimizing yields and sustainability. Industry 4.0 leverages smart factories and cyber-physical systems to revolutionize production processes. The rise of e-commerce and digital services demonstrates how online platforms are transforming consumer behavior and enabling 24/7 virtual marketplaces. The fintech revolution is reshaping financial services with mobile banking, blockchain and neobanks, while open banking fosters secure, API-driven innovation. The chapter also addresses shifts in the labor market, including the growth of the gig economy and telework and the challenges of digital exclusion and skill gaps.

Finally, it examines the emergence of the algorithmic state and digital governance, emphasizing the need for algorithm transparency, regulatory sandboxes and data-driven public services. Overall, the chapter portrays digital transformation as a pervasive force influencing every dimension of economic and social life, requiring adaptive policy, inclusive infrastructure and widespread digital literacy.
