ABSTRACT

This chapter presents findings from an analysis of in-depth interviews, complemented by workshops and a quantitative survey. Participants’ personal narratives are situated within the context of megaprojects developed in or near their localities. Visions of the good life center on fundamental values and needs – family, health and safety. The degree to which these needs remain unmet, which varies across countries, shapes individuals’ understandings of what constitutes a “better life.” This chapter examines these values and expectations, comparing them to prevailing visions of development. While the understanding of the good life and development occasionally align – particularly regarding employment, public services and infrastructure – they more often diverge. Megaprojects, as symbols of externally driven development, may provide certain benefits but also result in significant damage and loss to their immediate surroundings.
