ABSTRACT

The chapter is devoted to the Silesian voivodeship, located in southern Poland. Based on research on democratisation and de-democratisation, it describes different aspects of electoral, liberal, participatory and deliberative democracy at the voivodeship level and in the cities: Bielsko-Biała, Częstochowa, Gliwice and Katowice. In the period 2010–2023, there was some progress in democratisation at the local and regional territorial tier but at the same time there were some factors limiting it such as an extensive use of incumbency advantage or media bias. The analysis also shows that the central level significantly affects the condition of democracy in the voivodeship.
