ABSTRACT
The first chapter focuses on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and international commercial arbitration. The 4IR has introduced many advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain technology, and more. The latter refers to a neutral, efficient, and enforceable dispute resolution mechanism. This chapter aims to provide an introduction to the 4IR and an overview of the legal framework of international commercial arbitration. The chapter also analyzes the intersection between the 4IR and international commercial arbitration by identifying the technological innovations that have reshaped the landscape of dispute resolution. Lastly, it explains the technical skills required of arbitrators in the digital era. Against this backdrop, the chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of acquiring new skills to work as an arbitrator in a digitalized world.
