ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the first of four models from the Empowering Social Business Hybrids (SBHs) Matrix: Safe Creation Empowerment. It focuses on people who are potentially able to work but face severe exclusion from the labor market due to hostile or repressive environments, such as incarceration, systemic discrimination, or the absence of institutional infrastructure. Central to this model is the creation of “safe spaces” – protected environments in which people can begin a process of empowerment, free from coercive or stigmatizing pressures. Within these spaces, SBHs (especially Work Integration SBHs) activate economic capabilities by designing production processes tailored to the needs and strengths of beneficiaries. These enablement mechanisms allow beneficiaries to express themselves through work, recover lost functionings, and begin rebuilding their lives. The chapter also lays the groundwork for understanding the broader logic of empowerment, which will inform the analysis of the remaining models.
