ABSTRACT
Universities educate citizens to take professional roles and responsibility in the society in all sectors and administrative levels. Inclusive education is therefore fundamental for diversity in work arenas both in public and private sectors. This chapter discusses the relational aspect of human rights and how this can inform the implementation of the CRPD.
Higher education is part of an international sector characterised by similar cultures, and technical and institutional aspects. It is also embedded in the national political and legal structure. Education is important for building the democratic citizen. As argued by Martha Nussbaum, education is fundamentally a democratic, rather than an instrumental concern. Access to knowledge production and education is therefore a human rights issue. I here explore what an inclusive university can look like and propose seeing striving for a more inclusive university as a work in phases characterised by increased awareness.
