ABSTRACT
In 1977, Tzu Chi demonstrated its growing capacity for disaster relief in response to Typhoon Thelma and Typhoon Vera, which affected numerous communities across Taiwan. This chapter details the relief efforts led by Master Cheng Yen and Tzu Chi volunteers, who provided essential supplies and financial assistance to disaster survivors. Despite logistical challenges, including transportation and communication obstacles, Tzu Chi volunteers coordinated their efforts through meticulous planning and teamwork. A significant milestone this year was the installation of the first telephone at Jing Si Abode, greatly enhancing communication capabilities and operational efficiency.
