ABSTRACT

The Introduction highlights the urgency for polarized societies to find ways to share neighborhoods inclusively. Inclusion is viewed as both an ideal and a program for societal evolution. Attitudes toward inclusion change over time, influenced by global crises and economic opportunities. As such, inclusion is an ongoing global project, involving spatial considerations at different scales. Provisional definitions of inclusion and signals of inclusion are presented, with a framework for critique and development. This chapter explores how signals of inclusion operate, identifying mechanisms and scales for sending and receiving signals. The book’s structure is outlined, with Part I focusing on indexing signals of inclusion through global case studies. These cases range from micro-gestures to larger-scale planning and design efforts. Part II, Fostering, is an agenda for action, using case studies to conceptualize signals of inclusion and present a toolkit for action.
