ABSTRACT
A robust understanding of digital modernity requires engagement with technical topics. This chapter provides readers with that technical background by describing the history of post-war computing that led to the emergence of digital modernity. The chapter balances descriptions of computer software and architecture with socio-technical issues such as cybernetics and the changing status of software programmers. It argues that we can understand computing systems in precise terms, but there will always be aspects that resist explanation.
