ABSTRACT
Digital modernity remains heavily dependent upon twentieth century cultural and ideological influences. These features are closely connected to the technical foundations outlined in Chapter 2 but were not a foregone conclusion. This chapter explores the development of Silicon Valley's libertarian culture, identifying path dependencies and historical accidents that have influenced digital modernity's socio-technical development.
