ABSTRACT
This chapter analyses the impact of digital technology on the public sphere. Analysis of the digital public sphere is widespread and integral to research into misinformation and artificial intelligence but strangely disconnected from the history of modernity. Its connection to the digital modern is complex. A better understanding of the digital public sphere can protect civil society from its extremes.
