ABSTRACT
This chapter explains how digital systems perpetuate racial biases rooted in historical inequities, and how our understanding of digital modernity can be enhanced by viewing it from the perspective of China, a country with deep experience of technology and modernity. This complicates and in some senses inverts Orientalist tropes inherited from the nineteenth century, as well as demonstrating how digital modernity offers exemplary evidence for the social construction of technology.
