ABSTRACT

Chapter Five moves to the transnational sphere to analyse environmental sustainability politics as a source for Morocco’s soft power ambitions. Through the prism of royal speeches and case studies across different categories of sustainability, the chapter demonstrates how the Moroccan regime uses environmental narratives, bilateral and multilateral initiatives, agenda setting, and individual flagship projects to actively construct a reputation as environmental pioneer on the African continent (and beyond), creating a soft power basis that significantly contributes to paving the way for international support of Morocco’s irredentist claim of the Western Sahara territory.
